Learn useful AI workflows

The most valuable AI skill is knowing how to ask a clear question and verify the result. Start with a task you already understand: explaining a concept, planning practice or reviewing a draft. Tool availability and access plans vary, so check the provider's current terms before signing up.

Use an assistant as a tutor

State your level, goal and the part you find confusing. Ask for an example and a practice question. Attempt the question before requesting the answer. Explain the concept back in your own words to check understanding.

Example prompt: “I understand Python loops but struggle with dictionaries. Explain them with a student-marks example, then give me a practice exercise without the solution.”

Use coding assistance with tests

Ask for an explanation of an error, possible causes and test cases. Read the code before running it. Verify that a suggested library or function exists in official documentation. Test empty inputs, invalid values and normal usage.

Keep API keys and personal information out of prompts and public repositories. Do not run commands you cannot explain.

Support research without inventing sources

Use AI to develop search terms, organise notes or identify questions. Read the original source yourself before citing it. Confirm that a quoted passage and reference actually exist. Treat unsupported statistics and references as unverified.

Improve writing while preserving your voice

Provide the audience, purpose and word limit. Ask for feedback on clarity before requesting a rewrite. Check names, dates and factual claims yourself. Follow your college's rules for AI assistance and attribution.

Practise interviews

Ask for one question at a time and feedback against a stated rubric. Use examples from your own work. Record weak answers and improve the underlying skill instead of memorising a polished script.

A responsible weekly exercise

  1. Choose a task with a result you can verify.
  2. Write your own first attempt.
  3. Ask AI for targeted feedback.
  4. Compare the suggestion with a reliable source or test.
  5. Document what you changed and why.

Recognise the limits

AI output can be fluent and still incorrect. Your responsibility is to check facts, protect private information and understand the final work. The aim is better learning and judgement, not simply faster submission.
